ITS 2020 explained episode 18: How to design functional 3D printed walking art, by Yunfei Ma.

16 April 2021

Yunfei Ma is an innovative and creative footwear designer. Her works are strongly inspired by the architectural structure, sculptures, and contemporary abstract arts. She is fascinated by the combination of existing footwear manufacturing methods with modern 3d printing technology to create something ‘new’ for the future footwear.

Yunfei was selected as a finalist for ITS 2020 with her footwear collection “SHIFT+”.

We’re living through a shift of power. A whole generation is taking to the streets, hungry for change, passionate to make the Earth a better place to live. Yunfei’s designs are strongly inspired by the works of Piet Mondrain, abstract color artist Bridget Riley, digital artist Chad Knight and brutalist architectures & sculpture artist Antony Gormley. After creating her own colour artworks she applied them to her designs using 3D printing technology, with the aim to design functional walking art. She believes the technology advancement will shift our design thinking and manufacture method in a sustainable way. Her footwear prototypes are fully 3D printed and zero-waste. She uses a single material, but manages to achieve multi-density through careful engineering.

International Talent Support was launched in 2002 and throughout its history it has developed into the most highly recognized platform to showcase & support the strongest young talents on the planet. Most importantly, it created an ever-growing family supporting creativity, like branches on a tree growing in different directions, yet nurtured by the same roots. It has built an impressive Creative Archive, a unique collection tracing the history of fashion evolution. Many of the over 630 finalists were selected by top fashion brands where they now hold key positions, or have successfully developed their own lines.
