Even with our nearly 25 years of experience in selecting entries for the Contest, the arrival of the portfolios always brings the greatest excitement here at ITS. Whether enclosed in simple envelopes or large boxes—sometimes accompanied by almost sculptural structures and very original decorations—the projects tell stories through drawings, images, photos, and collages, all truly creative and profound. In line with our guidelines, the submitted portfolios turned out to be “borderless” and rich in diverse narratives and inspirations.
Each group interpreted the theme of crossing boundaries—both geographic and often symbolic—in an absolutely unique and personal way. The participants shared their experiences and different perspectives, which are especially meaningful in a region marked by a physical border that has deeply shaped its history. They explored their relationships with their own cultural roots—often varied—with memories and traditions of the past, with their bodies, with the beauty of nature and the sea, expressing concern for the future of the environment and natural resources.
They also documented the fascinating phase of selecting disused garments—used and then forgotten in closets or remembered from family wardrobes—which they then used to create new, collective outfits, applying upcycling and repair techniques, whether traditional or innovative, to transform the old into the new.
Browsing, reading, admiring, and being able to understand the work, ideas, and emotions of the participants has been one of the most meaningful and important parts of the project, and we are truly grateful for the precious contribution offered by this very young generation of creatives.
The selection process turned out to be a moment of exciting discovery and appreciation for the commitment and results achieved by the students and their teachers—especially in the context of such a complex and multifaceted project, which lasted nearly the entire school year.
Meanwhile, a special space is ready in the ITS Arcademy Wunderkammer that will showcase the project throughout the duration of the exhibition, from June 2025 to January 2026. It will be inaugurated on May 28 during the final event.
