Rom - falsified nostalgia

technical description

The 'chav jacket' with front metal zip and massive round shoulder pads. The navy hood is made out of recycled polyester and green nylon mixed with upcycled elements from old tracksuits. Worn with a pair of matching navy trousers that were made with a zero-waste cutting method. The apron is a patchwork of different embroidery elements inherited from her grandmother, mixed with different scraps of fabrics, and handmade crochet elements. Paired with black nylon with upcycled tracksuit details.

Size 1220x500x450mm, 2550 gr., 2022

concept

This collection is not only a subversive comment on issues of social acceptability, it's also a falsified nostalgia of bygone times. Based on a personal experience of xenophobia, Rafaela decided to research stereotypes of Romanians, mixing them together as ironic depictions to create a new identity, a second chance for a first impression. An "experimental realism”, where past, present and future are all portrayed simultaneously. Since we cannot escape the syndrome of poverty that meets pathologies of capitalism to create a kitsch reality we call “East European identity”, why not embrace it?
