concept

A visual representation of hometown Shetou in China, aesthetically referencing bricks and colours of buildings to create an autobiographical look of a traveller constantly returning home. By using computer knitting software to make patterns and designs that symbolise bricks and concrete. Developing knitted panels which were then arranged into a staggered layout, joined with woolen fabrics through a felting process to mimic the cement between bricks. Oversized silhouettes, with dropped shoulders and high necks - were inspired by the boxy, square shapes of the local houses of Shetou and evoke a sense of burden and weight captured in old photographs of local farmers and workers from the area.
