concept

“Ugly is attractive, ugly is exciting. Maybe because it is newer”. This quote by Miuccia Prada sent Cheng Zong on a mission to refute the idea of an immutable sense of aesthetics. Choosing glitch art, used extensively in the collection to go against the standard idea of “perfection”. Glitter, sublimated by applying thermal transfer, turned into a brand new surface which was lavishly decorated with patterns inspired by Taiwanese Operas, traditional theatrical spectacles held outdoors which are decorated with Chinese dragon ornaments and dazzling neon colours derived from traditional Taiwanese indigenous temples. Generally considered ugly and kitch in Taiwan, here it becomes a symbol of rebellion against perfection as well as a new code for genuine beauty.
