Part of a collection of artefacts inspired by medical devices. Hand brace made of a combination of orthopaedic materials, such as polyethylene, and materials used in jewellery and accessories, such as leather and acrylic glass. Item featuring a hole for the thumb and a series of metal rings for the rest of the hand. Leather straps threaded through metal buckles sitting around the wrist.

concept

Growing up in a family of orthopedic technicians. At the age of 6 she started gymnastics, unintentionally in contradiction to an orthopedic attitude towards health: she would place her body in gracious yet uncomfortable positions. Whereas the unnatural poses in gymnastics appear attractive, the unnatural body positions caused by illness or deformity and treated by orthopedics carry a feeling of discomfort. Her bodypieces lie at the intersection between a sensual movement and something that looks similar but actually carries an opposite feeling, forcing the wearer into complicated positions which hint at deformity elaborating a new code of aesthetics. The collection is an approach to open a conversation to bringing beauty to functionality in orthopedics.
