concept
The nostalgic aesthetic of the southern states of the USA (Ali Forbes lived in Alabama for a year) combined with a practical interest in bicycles, mechanical objects and industrial materials and processes form the basis of this collection. It is comprised of a series of "Interactive Jewellery Kits", each of which is inspired by Meccano and Airfix self-assembly model kits, using imagery and colour schemes associated with the Southern States of America. Each kit is intended to be accompanied by a printed booklet which will act as a "user's manual" explaining how different pieces can be combined together. To produce minimal waste the by-product of the laser cutting and chemical milling will be used for the packaging of the pieces. Each shape will fit into its own hole, like a jigsaw.
