concept

Elise began by looking at all things that are overlapped. Marquetry puzzles, pattern designs, marionettes, Rachel Feinstein’s sculptures, Kupka’s paintings. She knew she wanted to create a kind of marionette, not really comfortable with its clothes but nevertheless trying to play with it. The element of amazement was key so she researched jewellery boxes and surprise boxes bursting open in an explosion of sweets, which she mixed with the beauty and mystery of coral growing under the sea. Elise plays a lot with contrasts: colours, hardness and softness, curved and straight lines. We're inside a fairy tale, inside a child's dream, we're looking at a baby toy. These are marionettes that want to play with their uncomfortable clothes.
