concept

A memento is more than just an object that serves to remind one of a person or of a past event. By taking it into the mind’s eye, a sensory memory which can be fragmented and allusive, such an object turns into what we have lost, by charging it with meaning and translating into that lost person or past event into something tangible we can cling to. This is also why Melanie Lewiston worked with what remains of a loved one: skin, hair and the most intimate symbol of memento mori, the death mask. Her series of items are a representation of disparate memories of her mother Iris, to whom the collection is dedicated.
