Uniqueness is a form of self-consciousness. May found it in the unpredictable behaviour of people. Sometimes there seems to be no other reality than the one of appearances, and uniqueness becomes the congruence between the real personality and the appearance. This series is an investigation into the personal marks in the environment of May's subjects. She followed five individuals from September 2006 to March 2007 in order to build up the starting points for her project, being lead by curiosity the whole time. At first she took studio photographs as an introduction for further research. But along the way she found out and documented the distinction between locations and situations, personality and appearance.
