Portraits of her

concept

Asa Johannesson's pictures represent a comment on the norms and ideals of femininity as portrayed by photography. Drawing on the historic role of photography as a classification method, these portraits suggest a parallel between historical depiction and the production of female beauty ideals in contemporary media. By suggesting diversity to the very order of femininity this project aims at questioning the use of the female face in photography. This series thus encourages a reading of femininity as a fictitious category.
